I never thought I’d become a “blogger.” What exactly is a “blogger”? And, if I did become a member of the blogging community, when would I find the time to blog? Who would read my thoughts? Could my voice really make a difference? All of these questions, and more, constantly whirled through my head – like a carnival ride. But I have to blog. I have to write because there is a point of view missing in the discussion about food safety, food laws and policy, and farm animal welfare. In the end, I decided that writing a blog is my calling; a way I can serve others. A bit hokey? Maybe. My passion? Definitely. Who am I? I am a single mom, a law professor, a foodie, a wine lover and someone who cares deeply about empowering others.
I chose the title of the blog – “Read. Think. Act.” – because I want my readers to read new and different information (or in some cases re-think concepts learned long ago). Think about the information, challenge the information and learn from the information. Then, be inspired to act; to make a change – even if it is a small change. You are the boss of your life. You hold the trump card. Do something! Think how wonderful it will be to be part of a community of inspired people who act; who make a difference. One small step by one person can lead to great change for our community. I will do my part. My goal is to get you to do yours. A win-win.
So, let’s get started; let’s get out of our rut. Let’s unfold our arms and step away from the status-quo. The clock keeps ticking away the minutes and hours of our lives. The past is the past, the present is right now, and the future is ahead of us; 24 brand new hours each and every day. Today, right now in this moment, learn something new about food safety and food justice issues. Think about how the information impacts you and yours; then act. Your new motto is now “Read. Think. Act.”
May I suggest an “easy” first step in making a change? Monday, October 24th is our country’s first ever National Food Day. Let this day be a first for you, too. Make a change in your food and/or eating habits. It doesn’t have to be a big change, a small change will do. Eat healthier on 10-24. Drink more water and less soda on 10-24. Cook with family or friends on 10-24. Change….it does a body good.
